Number of copies: In order to facilitate "blind" reviews by two readers, please submit two complete copies of the article without author identification. Author information should appear on a separate title page that will not be sent on to reviewers. (We are aware that copyright protection for unpublished works requires identification on each page, but authors may rest assured, however, that their copyright privileges will be closely protected during the review process.)

Formatting:
Printout:

• Use standard sized (8.5" x 11") white opaque paper.
• Use Times New Roman 12 point type with 1-inch margins all around.
• Double-space all text, including notes, figure captions, and long direct quotations.
• Provide clear photocopies of all illustrations. Do not send photographs until the manuscript is accepted for publication. (See below.)
• Provide a separate list of illustrations with complete captions.

Digital files (should match the printout exactly):

• Use a common word-processing program, e.g. Word.
• Use the same font, margins, and spacing indicated above.
• Provide photographs in small JPEG files (500 KB or less). Higher resolution images will be requested if the manuscript is accepted.
• Include a separate list of illustrations with complete captions.

Length: We recommend 10,000 or fewer words,including notes. The Editors reserve the right to request even substantial reductions in article length as a condition for publication.

Editing process:
Edited copy: Contributors will be given the opportunity to revise their edited articles before these articles are delivered to the press. This will be the only opportunity for substantial changes.
Proofs: Contributors will receive galley proofs in PDF format for final correction. Only minor corrections will be possible at this point unless they are the result of editorial or printer error,if such errors are identified as such and not included in this assessment.

Illustrations:

• Authors must provide all illustrations and a list of captions.
• Illustrations may be submitted in photographs or digital images.
• Submission of high-quality color images is encouraged. The journal will use a color image on the cover and in digital publication. The print journal will continue to be published in black-and-white. Authors are encouraged to ind funding to subsidize color printing in their own articles. Please check with the production editor at University of Hawai‘i Press about the current cost of color reproductions.
• Printed illustrations
  • Photographs should have at least a narrow margin on all four sides to protect the print. Any portion of a photograph that is not for reproduction should be indicated on these margins or on an overlay firmly attached to the back of the print (not to the print itself).
  • Tables, charts, diagrams, line drawings, etc., must be camera-ready.
  • Each photograph or other illustration should be individually labeled with the contributor's name, its sequence number, and an arrow pointing to the top of the illustration.
• Digital images should be high resolution, in JPEG or TIFF format, and labeled with the author's last name and the plate number.

Permissions: It is the author's responsibility to secure written permission for print and digital (web) reproduction of illustrations or long passages of text obtained from other sources,both the publisher and the author/owner in the case of published material, or the author/owner of unpublished material. Copies of all permissions must be sent to Cindy Chun at UH Press.

Complimentary copies: Contributors will receive free of charge 2 copies of the issue containing their article. Additional copies may be purchased at a discount of 20%.
