Japanese Studies in Britain: A Survey and History
Author: Cortazzi, Hugh; Kornicki, Peter;
The focus of this book is on how Japanese studies have developed in a number of British universities, with almost all of that development taking place after the Second World War. Previously, Japanese studies were spread very thinly and achieved most of their successes in terms of research and publication outside the universities. Famously, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), which began teaching Japanese in 1917, is known for the wartime courses it provided for Army and Navy officers, and beyond that laying the foundations of university teaching of Japanese for the country as a whole. The volume contains contributions from all the institutions associated with the teaching of Japanese today.
