Japan and Greater China: Political Economy and Military Power in the Asian Century
by Greg Austin; Stuart Harris
"According to many recent English-language works, the future does not bode well for the relationship between Japan and China.... [This book] provides a much-needed corrective to this alarmist literature." --Pacific Affairs 76 (2003)"The theme of this book ... is of great relevance to development in Asia and indeed to the world at large." --China Review International 9 (2002) "While this is a good book on China and Japan, perhaps it is an even better book on the way relations with Japan have influenced the process of reform in China--particularly China's process of reengagement with the global economy, and even more particularly China's gradual acceptance of regional and/or global structures and norms." --Journal of Japanese Studies 29 (2003) "Japan and Greater China is a significant contribution to our understanding of East Asia's key bilateral relationship. Austin and Harris have written a comprehensive and insightful study which takes a nuanced view of the relationship." --Phil Deans, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London
This work is a comprehensive analysis of the political and strategic relationship between Japan and China, each of which in important respects aspires to a global status commensurate with its economic and military might. These two great powers have to come to terms with a history of antagonism, each viewing the other as circumspectly as their small regional neighbors view them. Japan and Greater China reviews the domestic and international foundations of the foreign policies of the two countries, notably the politics of national identity. The strategic and economic underpinnings of the relationship are assessed not exclusively by reference to bilateral concerns but within the global and regional position and interests of the two powers. For sale only in the U.S., its dependencies, Canada, and Mexico.
