Na Wahi Pana O Ko`olau Poko: Legendary Places of Ko`olau Poko
by Anne Kapulani Landgraf
Winner of the 1995 Ka Palapala Po`okela Award for Excellence in Photography
“Presents Landgraf’s landscapes in stunning detail.... The images are black and white, with endless depths, a field running from the tip of your nose to the horizon and beyond, a point of view than encompasses the totality of the landscape as a single, breathing entity, in which all elements are given equal weight.” —Honolulu Star-Bulletin
The Windward District of O`ahu comprises Ko`olau Poko and Ko`olau Loa. The former was a primary population center for Hawaiians, containing many irrigated terraces, fishponds, and places of worship. In response to the urban development that is now consuming Ko`olau Poko, Anne Kapulani Landgraf began photographing the area and its cultural sites. The duotone photographs and accompanying descriptions in this book are part of her attempt to rediscover and perpetuate an area rich in Hawaiian history. This is a stunning view of some of O`ahu’s sacred places.
