A Descriptive and Comparative Grammar of Western Old Japanese: Part 1: Phonology, Script, Lexicon and Nominals

by Alexander Vovin

Languages of Asia, No. 3
Distributed for Global Oriental

This is the first detailed descriptive grammar not only in English but in any language besides Japanese specifically dedicated to Western Old Japanese language (seventh to eighth century). The grammar is divided into two volumes, with the first volume dealing with sources, script, phonology, lexicon and nominals. The second volume will be dedicated to adjectives, verbs, adverbs, particles and conjunctions. Besides descriptive data, the grammar also includes comparisons of Western Old Japanese with Eastern Old Japanese and Ryukyuan, as well as critical analysis of various external comparisons.
